Whenever there is a report of reckless driving or street racing, I try to explain to people why it’s stupid and why you don’t want to be responsible for what happens if the guy you are racing—or who thinks you are racing him—wrecks. People often refuse to believe that the law can hold you responsible, state that this is unfair, and defend their actions or future actions by saying it’s not much of a risk or they’re careful only to do it for short period of time, or some other limitation that will be of no legal or practical use if there is a problem. This piece should be required reading in driver’s ed courses.

Haunting read, especially considering the background of the author. A must-read for every young gearhead.

Okay, after reading this, a few things come to mind.
1. Take it to a track
2. Why on earth would you race in the middle of the night with woods on either side. I’d be afraid a deer would jump out
3. Why race for two miles? Whatever happened to knowing you were beat and letting off the gas?
4. Don’t stand in the middle of a damn highway in the middle of the night. Did no one even think to look behind themselves? If someone was looking in the other direction they might have seen the Crown Vic’s lights and been able to move.
This whole story is just fucked up all the way around. The one in the Grand Ma should also have been held liable for racing as was the Vic driver.
I'll never understand the street racing culture. Anyone that does it shows to me that they have a wanton disregard for human life.

Well that’s a horrifying story. I’m glad we have a nearby dragstrip, and that I saved my racing for the track. I’ve always been against street racing. Whenever there are arguments about how harmless it is, I’ve never had the right words to explain why it could be total disaster. Now I have somebody else’s words to point to, at least.
Thanks for sharing.
